There they made him drummer boy of the regiment
Johnny marched through rain and mud with never much to eat
When the cry for battle came upon his drum he beat
Mid the yells and bursting shells did Johnny bravely come
Even though his frightened heart was beating like his drum
Soldiers weary of the war with no heart left to fight
Heard the sound of Johnny's drum a-coming through the night
Johnny's bravery touched their hearts, new courage came to them
