The Gambler Leaned In
Man says, "I keep tryin',
Showin' up with everything.
I'm softer now than I ever was,
Ain't sure what that will bring."
Cards slid, whiskey poured,
Lamplight low and thin
"Do I hold? Do I fold?
Do I just keep settin' in?"
And the gambler leaned in,
Wrinkled knuckles tappin' tin:
"Son, hope ain't a plan,
And love ain't earned by winnin'.
Don't throw the whole damn pot
Just 'cause you're scared of losin'.
Show up steady,
Show up real
She'll know you meant it
When the hand turns real."
Man says, "I've changed for once,
Gone gentle where I used to hard.
Learned sweet don't make you weak,
Sometimes it's the winning card."
The gambler laughed slow,
Set his chips where truth belongs
"Hard men get gentle someday,
That's where every strength comes from."
And the gambler leaned in,
Voice like gravel over wind:
"She'll see you when the lights are thin,
When your pride runs out of skin.
Hope ain't a plan,
But faith comes back again
Just stand your ground steady,
And mean it to the end."
...I gambled wrong once.
Bet on being right
Instead of being present.
Lost a woman who would've stayed
If I'd cared instead of winning.
So don't prove
Just show up.
Dealer burned another card,
River swelled outside the rail
Men bet futures on minutes,
Both winning and bound to fail.
Sometimes the jackpot
Ain't diamonds, glory or gold
Sometimes it's just being there
Long after the table's cold.
And the gambler leaned in again,
Slow grin like a weathered hymn:
"Son, if it's yours,
It'll let you back in.
Love ain't loud like winning
It's quiet when it lands.
Hope ain't a plan
But showing up again and again
Beats any man's hand
In the end."
Don't bet it all
Just be the one who stays.
