The moon hung high
That night in July
Overripe and off-white
And the sky was littered
With pockets of light
You could catch in your hand
If you held them tight
When I awoke
There wasn't a single sign
Of that night
So now I live my life
Making space for the things
I haven't lost yet
And I spend my time
Keeping tallies of the people
Whom I've left behind
The sun burned bright
The year was 2005
A bed of sand lay
Like a sheet of ice
And in the dust
I cut a series of lines
A cartographer cutting
His land's divides
But after lunch
Sand turned to clay
And my world
Was washed away
So now I live my life
Making space for the things
I haven't lost yet
And I spend my time
Keeping tallies of the people
Whom I've left behind
How long can this take
It's been twenty four years
And two weeks and six days
And I'm not over it
Anticipating a change
Waiting on this fever to break
Like the Loosing of reigns
The letting go, the falling away
If not today
Hopefully someday
