The Unanswering
Above the clouds
On harvest platforms
Where gardens and workers blurred
The sky opened
And something else
Was already there
Structures didn't fall all at once
They leaned into us
The city squirmed with things beneath
Black winds lifted us
And threw us to the planet below
Scratching always heard
Around corners we weren't watching
We were wet with strange sweat
Horrid with viscous rot
And everything moved
As if it knew what we didn't
We were here
When it began
Something else was there, waiting
We were here
When they came
And stayed all the same
They learned the rooms
They shunned the lights
They sought the smell of breath
They moved like thought
Through titanium lattice and glass
Patient as regret
No hunger shown
No alien cry
No need to prove their claim
They weren't here
To conquer us
They were here to end our world
The ones who stayed
Did not stand tall
We stood because there was nowhere left
They took the ones who broke away
Swept up and down
While chaos closed on those who remained
We held no victory
No human sign
No blessing left to claim
Only the shape of what remained
Where we waited
For what could not be named
