"Church Boots" was a really fun day in the writing room. It was my
First time gettin' to write with this artist named Ernest, along
With Jesse Frazier and Ashley Gorley, who I've written tons of songs
With, and they had already kinda started a song when I walked into
The room, and when I came in, we kinda finished what we were writing
And everyone was about to pack up and leave, and I remember Ernest
Started playing this little lick on the guitar that we all thought
Was really cool, and this is, like, one of those moments where it's
Like, "We love the melody, but what are we gonna write over it?"
And, uh, I literally, the day before, had typed this title into my
Phone called "Church Boots," and I had no idea why. Maybe I looked
Down at my boots on a Sunday and I was like, "These are my church
Boots." And I remember Ashley saying something like, "Yeah, my work
Boots are my church boots," and I was like, "What does that actually
Mean?" And so we wrote this whole storyline of kinda how, as a dude
I feel like I'm just kinda the same all the way through. You know
My old truck is my new truck, my good shirt is my new shirt, I party
On this dirt, I make money on this dirt, and it's, like, kinda all
These little innuendos of how you're kinda just the same dude through
And through, and that's okay. And then hooking it with "My work
Boots are my church boots." And I just thought, looking on paper at
The title "Church Boots," we all thought that was really interesting
And, and it's a really uptempo, fun song that I think a lot of people
Are gonna be able to relate to. So I loved gettin' to write this
Song. It was really cool that my first song with Ernest turned out
To be this song, and hopefully here's to many more in the future
