Yeah
They say time is a thief
But it doesn't steal everything at once
It takes it piece by piece
Until you're just holding onto the collar
Life is short although I shouldn't complain
It ain't about me it's the thoughts that remain
Or the ones that leave, driving me insane
Having a dog comes with all kinds of perks
Good for your health keeps you from going berserk
Might even turn you into less of a jerk
That's relative of course, every path is different
But those who know know the time spent is magnificent
There are downsides too, yeah, they're like a child
If you don't manage the train the track goes wild
Of course there's the mess, the hair to no end
Better have no allergies or you have pain to contend
Then there's vets, the walks, the pets
Okay, the bills pile up, that's a safe bet
But not hard to focus on the love that you get
Unconditional, the kind that hasn't failed you yet
It's worth every debt for the friend that you need
But there's one burden from the mind that can not be freed
The circle of life we try to go the whole way
But for our best friends it ends halfway
Oh everyday I pray, wishing you can stay
A while longer
At least till the end of the day
Just stay
You start to see the changes subtle and slow
The way the grey paint starts to cover the snow
On the muzzle round the eyes a little less glow
The walks get shorter the pace gets low
He sleeps a little longer in the afternoon sun
Dreaming of the rabbits that he used to run
And you watch him breathe chest rising and falling
Ignoring the future that is quietly calling
You help him on the couch you lift up the hips
You feed him the treats right from your fingertips
And you smile through the lump that is forming in your throat
Trying to keep this sinking vessel afloat
The circle of life we try to go the whole way
But for our best friends it ends halfway
And though I still pray, wishing you could stay
I know the sun, is setting on the end of the day
I know
And then comes the day that you knew was in the script
The balance tips over the hourglass flipped
The light in the eyes is tired and dim
And you know that it's time to do it for him
Not for you 'cause you want to hold on forever
But the bond that you built is the one you must sever
To save him the pain, to save him the fear
Even if it costs you a river of tears
The drive to the vet is the longest mile
You pat his head, you try to fake a smile
"You're a good boy" that's all you can say
As you watch your best friend fade to grey
It's the silence that gets you when you walk in the door
The clicking of the nails isn't there on the floor
The leash is still hanging right there on the rack
And you'd give anything just to have it all back
The hair on the rug that you used to detest?
Now you pick it up and you hold it to your chest
It's the price of the love, it's the cost of the deal
The only wound in the world, that never truly heals
The circle of life we try to go the whole way
But for our best friends it ends halfway
I can no longer pray, asking you to stay
I have to let you go at the end of the day
The house is too quiet
The rug is too clean
And I swore I couldn't go through it again
Couldn't break through the hurt the locked pen
But I look at the leash and I remember the love
A paw touches me from the clouds above
Somewhere out there in a cage cold and gray
There's another soul waiting for the light of day
Different eyes, different bark
Another soul same in the heart
I grab the keys, I take a breath
We honor the life
By saving the next
Let's go home buddy, yeah
Welcome home
Let's go home buddy
Welcome home
Welcome home
