The Mennonites waved at us solemnly

We heard their horses disappear down the lane

My skin was broken from all of the black fly bites

It was your birthday and we knew it would rain

Somebody laughed that I must be drunk

I had been drinking, but I wasn't well

The storm finally broke and it dampened the fire down

We heard the sound of their slow harness bells

We left something behind I knew we'd not find again

The heat was outrageous, you forget how I burn

You said, "Good luck replacing me," but it's really not like that

I forgot who I was or how to be alone

The bar I was playing had misspelt my name again

And people were leaving through the dark towards home

Somebody asked me how much I'd been drinking

Too much to drive, but I drove anyway

Down to the railway bridge where they found those bodies hid

When they ripped the earth apart through chalk and through clay
