Michael was eleven when he first ran away
He ran into the woods and he stayed there all day
Dad was so angry and Mom was so scared
And poor little Michael thought that nobody cared
So Dad called the sheriff while Mom sat there and cried
We gave him the best things that money could buy
What can go on in that foolish lad's head?
When they finally found him it was these words Dad said
"It's time to come home, son, it's time to come home
It's getting too dark to be out alone
You're too young a man to be out on your own
It's time to come home, son, it's time to come home"
Michael grew up angry at what I'll never know
But a pain deep inside him would not let him go
He started chasing trouble down a trail of broken dreams
Chasing shadow after shadow to sights yet unseen
He wound up in the city lost and feeling alone
When he finally gave up dreaming, started sinking like a stone
Then one night I heard the phone ring like so many times before
And I heard the old man saying my ear to the door
"It's time to come home, son, it's time to come home
It's been too many years to be all alone
Too many tears have been cried on your own
It's time to come home, son, it's time to come home"
For some it's so easy, for others so hard
When one man's fond memories are another man's scars
Some are so fearful of things they don't know
They hold onto notions that they just should let go
Michael was alone when he finally passed on
The police said they found him with a needle in his arm
They said he looked so peaceful as he laid upon his bed
And as we stood around his tombstone it was these words Dad said
"It's time to come home, son, it's time to come home
It's been too many years to be all alone
Too many tears have been cried on your own
It's time to come home, son, it's time to come home
It's time to come home, son, it's time to come home"
