I wrote a letter to my sweetheart

Told her how I really loved her so

Before I knew what I was writing

I said, "I have to go."

How was I to know she'd feel that way

Or see the hurt behind my words?

I promised I would write her every day —

I told her, I told her

I left on Sunday after church that day

Gave her one last kiss goodbye

After a year or two of no replies

I wrote her mama a letter, saying "Hi"

To my shock and sadness, when I came back home

I realized a part of me had died

Every day while I was overseas
