I parked the car where the driveway used to be,
Right beside the old redbud tree.
Grass has grown where the porch once creaked,
But I can hear the echoes underneath my feet
The soft wind moves like a ghost in the leaves,
Calling out the child I used to be.
I close my eyes and see it all-
Every memory in those paneled walls.
I'm standing where the house once stood,
Where life was simple, safe and good
The years have washed the walls away,
But the love inside me still remains
The house may be gone, but my memory holds the key,
It still feels like home to me.
Mama worked at nights at the small café,
Stretching her tips just to make the way.
The dollars stretched till they nearly tore,
But she always found a little more.
The soft wind moves like a ghost in the leaves,
Calling out the child I used to be.
I close my eyes and see it still-
Every sacrifice she made right here.
I'm standing where the house once stood,
Where life was simple, safe and good
The years have washed the walls away,
But the love inside me still remains
The house may be gone, but my memory holds the key,
It still feels like home to me.
I feel her strength with me today -
A love I carry every day
Her voice still guides through the years,
Like a lantern glowing, always near
I'm standing where the house once stood,
Where life was simple, safe and good
The years have washed the walls away,
But the love inside me still remains
The house may be gone, but my memory holds the key,
It still feels like home to me.
