The preacher said the final words as I turned away from Dad
The choir was softly singing (What a friend we have in Jesus)
I know Dad's happy now to be up there with Mom
All they left behind on earth was me and their old farm
I tried it for a little while just staying there alone
A farm is a lonely place with my folks gone
I put it up for sale and a man came by one day
I almost sold it to him 'til it seemed I heard Dad say
Take care of the farm, son
The old house needs some paint
Don't forget the broken hinge
Down on the garden gate
The leaky roof needs patching
Out on our old barn
We're leaving it to you now, son
Take care of the farm
And then I fell in love and married a girl so true and kind
Why, she's a lot like Mom, so soft
And gentle and works right by my side
Well, there's flowers out in the garden
Now and the cellar's full of food
And I've got a son to help me and the old farm, it's looking good
And someday, yes, someday I may say
Take care of the farm, son
The old house needs some paint
Don't forget the broken hinge
Down on the garden gate
The leaky roof needs patching
Out on our old barn
We're leaving it to you now, son
Take care of the farm
