We grew up in Galesburg, cornfields and radio glow
AM gold drifting through a cracked-open window
Summer stuck to our skin like a secret we'd keep
Fireflies blinking while the whole town slept
We'd swim in Lake Story till the sky turned pink
Dry off in the grass with a Cherry Coke drink
Curly slide at Rotary Park, metal hot from the sun
Burned our backs, but we called it fun
Bike tires humming on chipped blacktop
Baseball diamonds and the taste of pop
We didn't know we were golden then
Just kids with scraped up knees and ten-cent dreams
Oh, Lake Story nights and neon mall lights
Small town hearts under Midwestern skies
We were forever in the flicker of a Friday
Static on the screen but we felt okay
From penny candy sweet to the edge of town
We thought this world was ours somehow
Galesburg, you still echo in me
Like a cassette rewinding endlessly
Bought penny candy from Pearl downtown
Sugar on our lips, no parents around
Then we'd sneak to the Brick Yards past the trees
Or those underground tunnels nobody believed
We'd swear we heard ghosts in the dripping stone
But we laughed too loud to feel alone
Skated till midnight under parking lot lights
Concrete sparks in the cool July nights
Saturday found us at the mall all day
Sandburg Mall Rats in our own cliché
Arcade tokens and a borrowed kiss
Food court fries and teenage bliss
Oh, Lake Story nights and neon mall lights
Small town hearts under Midwestern skies
We were rebels in a grain-silo dream
Living loud on a quiet street scene
From downtown chases to backyard smoke
We were legends in the jokes we told
Galesburg, you're still part of me
Like a song stuck on MTV
Cops would shout as we'd scatter and run
Skateboards clattering, hearts undone
We'd bolt back home, basement glow
Pass the joint, let the stereo flow
Synths and guitars and a flickering TV
Somewhere between hope and apathy
We thought we'd leave, we swore we might
But small towns tattoo you in the night
Oh, Lake Story nights and firefly skies
Time moves on but it never really dies
We were kids in the 80s and 90s haze
Living slow in a faster age
From penny candy dreams to who we'd be
Every road started on Seminary
Galesburg, you're still inside of me
Like a worn-out tape I'll never delete
We grew up in Galesburg...
And somehow, it still grows in me.
