It stood just past the tree line where the trail begins to bend
Too tall too still too broken-limbed to pass as nature's friend
Its antlers branched like lightning its eyes were wrong and wide
And though it looked like something known I felt the urge to hide
It walked on legs that didn't match joints bending wrong with grace
It stared as if it knew my name-no fear upon its face
The woods went silent all at once no bird or branch would sway
And every part of me cried out: Turn back Don't look Don't stay
That's no deer from these hills no creature of the land
It mimics what you want to see then takes you by the hand
So if you see one watching you beneath a moonlit sky
Remember what the old folks say: Not all deer pass you by
Its hooves were sharp like splintered bone it whispered without sound
And every step it took was wrong yet never touched the ground
They say it's old as mountain stone from deep beneath the roots
A hunter made of shadow-flesh in camouflage and boots
That's no deer from these hills no creature of the land
It mimics what you want to see then takes you by the hand
So if you see one watching you beneath a moonlit sky
Remember what the old folks say: Not all deer pass you by
So mark the signs and trust your gut if something feels askew
For once you've seen the Not-Deer's gaze it just might follow you
Pray you never hear its call or see its crooked grace
For if it smiles with human teeth-you're in the wrongest place
