Everybody seems to say
That they recall it, like it was yesterday
Incredible that it could happen at all
But I missed it, at least I don't recall
How could it have happened
And somehow I never knew
Everybody says they knew it was coming
I guess I must have had something better to do
I was working at the time
I didn't see
How important it would turn out to be
They say the whole world
Stopped to stare
Wherever I was meant to be I wasn't there
Everybody says they saw it
That's what they all claim
But if you ask them to describe it
Nobody's answer is quite the same
Was it July or September
Nobody seems to remember
But they tell me they showed it on TV
And it was really something to see
I was working at the time
I didn't see
How important it would turn out to be
They say the whole world
Stopped to stare
Wherever I was meant to be I wasn't there
I like to say it was work
But maybe it was play
Could be I just didn't know
That there was something going down that day
Maybe I was still asleep
That could explain a lot
I slept a lot that week
And on the other hand I might have simply forgot
If I lied and said I saw it
What kind of difference would it make
Would they welcome me with open arms
And say there must have been a mistake
Or would there still be some other thing
How I look or maybe what I believe
Would they still have some sort of trouble with me
If I thought things would change would that be naive
Cus when I say I wasn't there on that day
They give me a look and then walk away
A community's defined by things that we share
I'm going to be on the outside 'cause I wasn't there
Did it matter at all - no way I'll ever know
