Well, Luke was born in the spring of '59

Only son to an unwed mother and a family without a dime

He never knew Santa Claus, and he didn't sleep no nightlight

Granddaddy was a rough old man, he cooked shine all his life

And he put Luke to work just as soon as he could hold a knife

The first thing Luke ever learned was to run when he seen a fly

Yeah, when Luke got older, well, his name started getting around

You could see him every Friday night just outside the town

At the quick stop parking lot where old Luke be found

He always kept a couple of cases and a trunk for that old car

And for two one-dollar bills he would hand you a mason jar

He'd give you that sideways grin and say

About 11:30 on a Friday night

Luke's heading back home with a sold-out shine

And he sees a car broke down and pulled over on the side

Well, a stranger walked up and he leaned inside

And Luke said, "Yeah, man, I'll give you a ride"

But Luke didn't know that somebody 'bout to died

A stranger sat down in the car and right away he noticed the cash

In a little brown envelope he'd been thrown up on the dash

And he knew what he did, he just wanted to quit the slash

Well, Luke felt the stick and then that bugle went into a spin

He started kicking and screaming, old Luke could see the man

But he had a will inside of him that would not bend

Granddaddy was waiting up on him when he came running outside

He said, "Damn, boy, can't you do nothing right?"

He made Luke drag the body back into the woods

The whole time he was kicking and cussing

Telling Luke he wasn't, no good

Something snapped inside Luke, I guess he never really understood

Luke came out of them woods by daylight

He looked like a man who had been in one hell of a fight

Luke was busy digging two graves that night
