FONTANA DAM
My parents came from further east
And built a home in Proctor
They worked the land beneath their feet
Until their dying day
And every week on Sunday
I’d walk down to Hazel Creek
To place a flower on the grave
Where side by side they lay
In the shade of the beech and the balsam fir
They’re waiting there for me
To bring flowers and remember days
Before the war
Beneath the whispering birch and the buckeye
They are lying there alone
No road to lead me to them
In the trees along the shore
But then one day the TVA
They said the dam was coming
To help us win the war, they said
We’ve got to flood the town
We’ll move the graves above the lake
Every bone and headstone
We’ll see that they can rest in peace
Up on the higher ground
In the shade of the beech and the balsam fir
They’re waiting there for me
To bring flowers and remember days
Before the war
Beneath the whispering birch and the buckeye
They are lying there alone
No road to lead me to them
In the trees along the shore
Well, they took my home and moved the graves
And built Fontana Dam
A promise made with smile and a pen
And then the town was gone
The north shore road they said would come
Was started then abandoned
The war was won, the TVA Decided to move on
There’s no light at the end of the tunnel
It ends in the heart of the hill
They said the road would keep on going
But I know it never will
In the shade of the beech and the balsam fir
They’re waiting there for me
To bring flowers and remember days
Before the war
Beneath the whispering birch and the buckeye
They are lying there alone
No road to lead me to them
In the trees along the shore
There’s no road to lead me to them
In the trees along the shore
