I left the small world looking for the lizard lounge
Trying to find something, what it was escapes me now
A man handed me an oak tree in a little plastic bottle
And this is what he said to me
Plant it, love it, leave it, and let it grow
And one day, when years have passed
Return to see that oak
I said I didn't think that I could handle it
He said, "Of course you can, you're a full-grown man
Just take this tree and care for it"
He was collecting for a charity near where he lived
So I took the little oak and gave him twenty quid
I took the tree with me and went to play a gig
Held it up on stage while people cheered at it
And I promised them that I would
Plant it, love it, leave it, and let it grow
And one day, when years have passed
Return to see that oak
Just to clarify, this was at Glastonbury
And by Sunday afternoon, I'd lost the tree
But the magic of that place brought it back to me
I safely got it home and it stared at me
And said, "Plant me, love me, leave me, let me grow
But plant me somewhere special
I'm the Glastonbury oak"
The very next weekend I had another gig
At the Strines Nightingale near the Peak District
A pub run by a group of friends from Manchester
They used to have a venue in the northern quarter
They'd come out to the sticks to make a go of it
Opened up a pub and put a vibe on it
It struck me as the perfect place to
Plant it, love it, leave it, let it grow
Come back from time to time
And see that oak
That night at Strines was a banging night
Stayed up until the early hours talking shite
A piano in the corner and an Irish drum
Had ourselves a proper little singalong
And Chris was more than happy to take the tree
Turns out that Lee loved Glastonbury as much as me
So in the end, I was just a middle man
I didn't plant the tree but I left it in good hands
And I can't wait to go
See it, love it, leave it, let it grow
Plant it, love it, leave it, let it grow
Plant it, love it, leave it, let it grow
Go see it for yourself
The Glastonbury oak
