Peace, this is Donald D from the Universal Zulu Nation
And you are now listening to Capital
1212, DJ Flyte, DJ Professor Fresh
Interlude on the Connection of Reggae and Hip-Hop
Now, the first generation of Hip-Hop DJ's
Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa and Grandmaster Flash
All had Caribbean backgrounds
The Reggae DJ would bring the sound system
Out to the public to play their music
And with that in mind, Kool Herc did the same
But he would play various styles of music with a funky break
That would later be known in Hip-Hop as breakbeats
Afrika Bambaataa would be the first DJ that I
Ever heard play Reggae and Calypso at his parties
The first collaboration with Reggae and Hip-Hop was when King
Yellowman and Run DMC did a song called "Roots, Rap, Reggae"
Then the Fat Boys would do a song called "Hardcore Reggae"
Now it's the norm for Reggae and Hip-Hop to merge
So a big shout out to Kingston, Jamaica's DJ Kool
Herc for showing us the way on how it should be done
