I lit the fire and closed the door
I settled down into an easy chair
I turned the pages of a life
They drew me in an echo filled the air
A little prayer was written down to share
I felt the rumble
Heard the sound of marching feet
I saw the veil of fear and sadness
Fall across an urban street
I ate the food and drank the wine
The bitter taste of her defeat
It was a long long time ago
But even so it felt like yesterday
And where she led me I would go
The words a path
I needed to follow
A trail of tears
Under a dark shadow
I hitched a ride upon her story I was sold
I drew her face while I was waiting for her secrets to unfold
I was the candle burn away
The fire was out and I was cold
Saw the bars around her cage
Saw the quiet anger rage
Locked down a heart of gold
Buried in layers of winter cold
But every time she felt the sunlight on her face
The cage was opened and she found a better place
But all the while her fate was sealed
And now we feel her warm embrace
