This morning I awoke from a beautiful dream
To the sound of little birds sweetly singing
And the golden rays of sunshine that gently warmed my face
Brought to life the peaceful world all around
I'd been dreaming of a place where the milk and honey flow
With streets of gold, I think they called it 'Heaven'
But as I look around and I rise to greet the day
I thank the Lord above that it was just a dream
"West Virginia, Almost Heaven"
I'd say they got it wrong if you ask me
"Heaven is almost West Virginia"
Sounds more like the way it oughta be
So I set about my business of taking in the scenes
Of some jumpin' deer and the wildflowers bloomin'
Nature's beauty all around, I take a moment to sit down
And smell the honeysuckle blowin' on the breeze
From a mountain up so high where the trees can touch the clouds
A crystal stream of water gently flowing
I kneel down by the creek, and as I dip my hands to drink
I think, "How Heaven can compare I just don't see"
"West Virginia, Almost Heaven"
I'd say they got it wrong if you ask me
"Heaven is almost West Virginia"
Sounds more like the way it oughta be
Sounds more like the way it oughta be
