A little field mouse came up to me while I was mowing hay
I grabbed the stick that was nearby and swept the mouse away
Cute mouse, he was just standing there not meaning any harm
He looked at me and I at him the moment seemed so long
In youth I did a cruel thing I regret until this day
The stick I gave a mighty swing and swept the mouse away
Why did I do it? He hurt no one
In fact I was entranced, by the little creature of the field that I had met by chance
Man's disrespect exists within us all
We must come to understand the gifts of creatures small
For we must learn to treasure all creatures of this earth
They fill our lives with pleasure from the moment of our birth
So little mouse forgive me for you have taught me well
Respect is the way to heaven
Disrespect is the way to hell
