I used to wait for Dad with my old cane pole
Knowing he would take me to our favorite fishing hole
It was just about a mile to that old river bed
And on the way down there I was always up ahead
But that old journey home seemed like a hundred miles
Uphill all the way and I'd keep up for awhile
Dad would always stop just about half way
And he knew when I'd caught up, he would hear me say
Daddy, I'm tired, this road is just too long
How come it seems so far when we're heading home
My cane is getting heavy, my legs are just too weak
Daddy, would you carry me
Oh, Daddy, would you carry me
But that was years ago and everything has changed
The man that used to carry me now leans upon a cane
But I still turn to him when life gets me down
And wonder who I'd go to when he is not around
So just the other day, I walked up to the house
And stepped into the front door
Dad was knelt beside the couch
He did not hear me enter, but I could hear him pray
And I learned another lesson when I heard my daddy say
Father, I'm tired, this road is just too long
How come it seems so far when we're heading home
My cane is getting heavy, my legs are just too weak
Father, would you carry me
Oh, Father, would you carry me
