The Stone (Folk)

Deep in the earth, in silent dark

I slept alone without a spark

Ages passed, so still, so slow

Till the world called: Time to go

Lifted high from ancient ground

On the mountain, light I found

I felt the wind, I felt the sky

The sun, the ice, the world so high

I am the stone beneath your feet

I've traveled far, I'm not complete

I change, I turn, I find my way

But in my core, I always stay

Lightning cracked the sky in two

Thunder roared and the storm wind blew

The mountain let me fall and fly

From the peak down to the valley wide

The river caught me, soft and kind

Wore me smooth and eased my mind

It sang to me through night and day

All things change, but all things stay

I am the stone beneath your feet

I've traveled far, I'm not complete

I change, I turn, I find my way

But in my core, I always stay

A human came with steady hands

Built a bridge where the crossroad stands

I bore their steps, their joy, their tears

A path for all through passing years

War came down with fire and cry

The bridge fell broken, so did I

But someone found me in the dust

Built a home with faith and trust

The house burned down, the ashes flew

But still I waited, strong and true

Then gentle hands picked me once more

Set me in a church's floor

Now I stand where voices rise

I hear their songs, I feel their cries

Their hope, their fear, their love, their prayer

And I am grateful to be here

I am the stone beneath your feet

I've traveled far, I'm not complete

From mountain high to river's bend

From fire to love, we all transcend

I am the stone

And I remain
