Found it in a charity shop
Wedged beside a broken clock
And someone's wedding china
Pages smell like smoke and rain
He wrote it in the margins-
Underlined it twice, crossed out
Then wrote it back again:
I will not die in this town
I never knew him, this Tom
But I know him like myself
Handwriting slants forward
Like a man walking into wind
Listed cities he would take
Names he'd make remember him
Drew little stars beside the lines
Of books he thought would save him
I never knew him, this Tom
But I know him like myself
Handwriting slants forward
Like a man walking into wind
I was him once
So were you
Standing at the edge of leaving
Waiting for a view
The notebook cost me fifty pence
Keeps its place upon my shelf
Sometimes I turn to that same page
And introduce myself
