Equal Dirt

The silence falls when I walk in

You see the scales, I see the skin

You check the sword upon my hip

And watch the fire escape my lip

I order ale just like you do

I feel the cold the same as you

But in your eyes I see the fear

Because a monster's standing near

I know the tales your fathers told

Of cities burned and stolen gold

You paint the picture in your head, ohh

Of burning towns and rivers red

But I have seen a Human kill

For nothing but a copper bill

And I have seen a Drow defend

A fallen stranger like a friend

The heavy earth will claim the bone

No matter what you call your own

The darkness grows in every seed

So judge the spirit by the deed

We walk beneath the fading sun

And share the grave when all is done

I saw a devil of the flame

Forgive a debt and clear a name

I watched a holy Paladin

Commit a dark and quiet sin

The holy light can burn and blind

The shadows can be soft and kind

You cannot weigh the moral worth

By judging places of our birth

My teeth are sharp, my claws are long

But I use them to fight the wrong

While men with smooth and gentle skin

Can let the darkest demons in

So look at me and hold your ground

And tell me honestly what you found

A monster born to tear apart?

Or just a beating, heavy heart?
