Once upon a time there was a little girl who lived with her mother
And father in the woods. She was such a lovely, friendly little
Girl that her mother made her a fine red cape with a big hood
To keep her snug and warm. The brilliant scarlet colour of the
Cape made her more easily seen when playing in the woods, so
She wouldn't get lost. The little girl adored the cape and always
Wore it, so therefore she was nicknamed Little Red Riding Hood
One fine sunny morning, Little Red Riding Hood and her mother went
Berry-picking out into the forest. Her mother gave her a basket
To put the berries in, and because they were all so ripe and juicy
Little Red Riding Hood soon filled the basket. When they arrived
Home they found that they had picked far too many berries for
Just one pie, so Little Red Riding Hood's mother made two instead
"I know" said Little Red Riding Hood, "
I'll take one to Granny. She loves berry pie."
"What a good idea!" said her mother
"She'll be so pleased to see you."
So off she skipped with the pie in a basket, and wearing the
Red cape of course. Her mother's warning rang through the
Trees, "Take care! And remember, don't stray from the path
Stay on it right up until you reach Granny's front door."
But Little Red Riding Hood was a sensible girl and
Hurried right along so that she would reach her Granny's
House quickly and safely. Also so that she could have
A taste of the berry pie before it became too cold
Now in these particular woods there also lived a wolf. A big, bad
Hungry wolf who was always on the prowl for a tasty little girl or
Two. The smell of the berry pie had alerted him and he crept to the
Edge of the path for a peek at, what was hopefully, his next meal
On seeing Little Red Riding Hood, the wolf clapped his huge
Hairy paws together. "Oooh goody!" he drooled, "A scrummy
Little girl with perhaps... berry pie for afters." He grinned
Greedily, and after taking a moment to compose himself
Ambled casually onto the path beside Little Red Riding Hood
"Hello little girl," said the wolf sweetly, in his best
Friendly-to-little-girls-before-he-ate-them-up voice
"Oh hello! You surprised me," said Little Red Riding Hood
"Look, I don't mean to be rude, but my parents told me never
To speak to strangers, and unless I'm mistaken," she said
Putting one finger on her chin, "I don't actually know you."
The wolf was quite surprised himself by the little girl's
Abruptness. All the little girls he'd known up till now
Hadn't been anywhere near as forthright as this one was. But
He regained himself once again and carried on with his plan
"Oh don't be frightened of me, little girl," he boomed in a
Jolly voice. "I'm the forest helper of little girls, um, who
Might be lost. Friendly I am and always ready, er, with a helping
Paw to send you safely on your way." The wolf struggled to find
The right words to be sure to befriend Little Red Riding Hood
"Don't worry about me," she said. "I know exactly where I am going."
"And where might that be?" the wolf asked
"To my Granny's of course! I've a delicious, sweet berry pie that I
Must hurry along to her, so if you'll excuse me..." Little Red Riding
Hood made to go on. The wolf jumped at his chance to supposedly help
"Does your Granny live in a cottage not far from here?" he asked
"Why yes, that's right," said Little Red Riding Hood
"Well I know a shortcut!" said the wolf hurriedly
"I'm not sure," said Little Red Riding Hood
After all, she had been told to stay on the path
"It's a lot quicker," the wolf said
Desperately trying to win her confidence
Little Red Riding Hood thought about that. The shorter
The route, the quicker she would get to her Granny's
House, so surely her mother would be pleased
"Okay, which way?" she said to the now smiling wolf
"Er, that way!" said the wolf, not even looking where he was pointing
"Great, well thanks a lot Mr Wolf," and off she
Skipped in the direction that the wolf had pointed
The wolf was a little bemused for a second. "How did she know my
Name?" he thought. "Never mind, off to Granny's house and some
Dinner!" So off he dashed up the forest path towards Granny's house
When he reached the little cottage he tapped on
The door in a very little girl-like fashion
"Who is it?" called Granny
"It's me, Little Red Riding Hood," answered the wolf in his
Best little girl voice. "I've brought you a berry pie for tea."
"Oh how wonderful!" Granny said, coming to the door
On opening it and seeing the great, hairy, wicked-
Looking wolf, she screamed. So did the wolf, and as he did
He opened his giant jaws and swallowed poor Granny whole
"Easy meal," mused the wolf as he lumbered across Granny's
Parlour to her bedroom. He was so much fatter now with Granny
In his tummy that walking wasn't easy. Picking up one of
Granny's frocks, he started to dress. He put on beads and
Bangles and squeezed himself into a pair of Granny's slippers
Last of all he placed a bonnet on the top of his head
Meanwhile Little Red Riding Hood had had the devil of a time trying to
Find her Granny's house in the direction in which she had been
Pointed. She had finally found the path again and from
There on quickly found her Granny's cottage nestling between
The trees. Letting herself in through the back door she was
Surprised to see Granny, looking a lot larger and lumpier
Than usual, trying to balance her glasses on her seemingly
Longer nose and mumbling gruffly every time they fell off
"Hello Granny," she said. "What are you doing?"
The wolf nearly jumped out of his skin and whirled round to
Face Little Red Riding Hood, the glasses falling off once more
"Oh hello my dear, you surprised me," he said in his nicest little
Old lady voice."I'm sorry, Granny, I just thought I'd surprise you
With this berry pie I've bought for you and set your table for tea."
"How very sweet of you!" said the wolf picking up the glasses
"Um, Granny, are you feeling well today?" said Little Red Riding Hood
"Fine, why?" the Wolf said as he
Settled down in Granny's rocking chair
"It's just that you're looking a little, well, hairy
Today. And your nose is so much larger than I remember."
"All the better to smell your berry pie with, my dear."
"Your eyes too. They're a lot, well, I wouldn't say bigger
But there's definitely something different about them."
"All the better to see you and the berry pie with!" chuckled
The Wolf. He was quite enjoying his role as the grandmother
"It's not just your nose and eyes, Granny. Your ears
They're huge! They stick right out of the top of
Your bonnet and they've never done that before."
"All the better to hear you chattering
With, my lovely!" enthused the Wolf
"Granny!" exclaimed Little Red Riding Hood. "
What's wrong with your teeth? They're massive!"
"Yes!" said the Wolf with a little howl of delight. "And they're
All the better to eat you up with!" And with that the Wolf leapt
Out of the rocking chair and gobbled Little Red Riding Hood up
The very full Wolf was just settling himself down for a nap before
The grand finale of his meal, the berry pie, when in burst Little
Red Riding Hood's father. He had been cutting firewood up in the area
And had just come round for a sneaky taste of the pie when he had
Spied the Wolf through the window. He fired two shots off with his
Gun, up into the trees. The Wolf jumped so much with the shock of
The loud bangs that he leapt up high into the rafters of the house
The jolt of the leap made his mouth open wide and out jumped Little
Red Riding Hood and Granny. Another shot was fired which had the Wolf
Running out of the house, deep into the forest, casting off Granny's
Clothes as he went, never to be seen again. Little Red Riding Hood
Was so pleased to be reunited with her father
And Granny that a little celebration tea was
Enjoyed, the berry pie being the best treat of all
