I love the old blues, the ones that tells the stories, you know
You know, I've been around the world a few times
And everywhere you go, people get the blues, you know
Sounds different, naturally, wherever you are
But it feels about the same
And I remember I learned that lesson one time back
It was in the mid-90s
I took most of the year off as a singer, you know
And became an actor on a TV show
It was called Birds of Paradise
Wasn't on very long, that's why
But I had fun doing it anyhow
And we were filming over in Hawaii, which wasn't bad
Especially around January, February, something like, yeah, you know
And one of the nice things
Well, it was about the best vacation I ever had
Not just 'cause I was in Hawaii so much
But I got to be somebody else for the better part of a year
So I had a vacation from being me, which is just awesome
I recommend it
One of the really sweet things was that every once in a while
They'd get some of the local musicians over there
And weave them into the story that week
So that there'd be some local flavor
And they got really fine pickers, really great players over there
Playing in their own style, naturally
And instantly recognizable if you know what you're hearing, you know
And they're still to this day
Writing, playing, singing in their own language
And keeping the culture alive
And I just love that, you know
So we was working together for about a year
And then the show comes to, you know
We're finishing up the last episode
And we find out it's not gonna be picked up
That's the end of it
But you become like friends and family, you know
You're getting up every day at four in the morning
And getting to sleep at ten
You work, it's hard
And so everybody's moping around, bummed out, you know
Feeling down
And I wrote them a little guitar piece in their own style
Just to say thank you and farewell, you know
Little Hawaiian style blues, you might say
Called the Haleiwa Farewell
