Early dawn, frost on my breath, coffee in hand
Lines wrap round the building, doors locked till I can't stand
Lights flicker on displays, deals on TVs and toys
But I feel that pull in my chest—this isn't joy!
Cars circling parking lots, tempers flare in the cold
Someone screams about a parking space, another voice grows bold
Inside the mall the air is tight, elbows and carts collide
And a mother shields her child, while strangers shove her aside!
Black Friday lines, bargain signs, hearts pounding at the gate...
Why do we let greed define the seasonal debate?
When the doors throw open, stampede for the prize
We lose our manners, our pity, our grace in stranger's eyes
We hunt for shiny gifts, forget what's good and kind
When the doors throw open, what holiday have we left behind?
When the doors throw open, our hearts grow cold and mean
We trample over neighbors in a fluorescent dream
Chasing plastic treasures, we lose the gift of time...
When the doors throw open, we lose our humanity...
Just to save a dime!
There's that video on my feed—Costco cart crashes into someone's aisle
Cries over the last widget, folks fighting internet style!
Guns in retail parking lots, tempers lit by deals so rough
Five a day in holiday shops—when is it enough?
Mall employees plead for calm, security tightens up the halls
Ornaments strewn, price tags torn, over nothing at all!
And I think of silent nights, songs that warm the winter air
Of laughter shared, when people cared, with love beyond compare!
Scarcity drags out the worst in us, under fluorescent glare...
But somewhere in those Christmas lights there lies a different prayer!
Could we slow it down—walk in snow, breathe in the cold air
Sing a carol door to door, share cookies not a stare
Hold hands with strangers, lift voices in the choir
Let kindness be the melody, love our biggest desire!
This season is not about the push, the shove or the fight for useless stuff
It's about hope in cracked hearts, light shining in the rough..
When the doors throw open, let compassion fill the aisle
Let us remember, in every frantic smile
That gifts are just tokens of love, of presence, of time
When the doors throw open, let that love be our rhyme
When the doors throw open, let us find what's real inside
Beyond the chaos, beyond the lines...
Let the spirit of Christmas... be our guide
