Where I Found God

I didn't find Him in a steeple

Didn't hear Him in a hymn

Didn't see no stained-glass answers

When the light was growing dim

Didn't feel Him in the pews

Didn't know His name back then

I was running hard from mercy

With a life full of amens I didn't mean

I was looking in the wrong places

For a God who already knew my face

I found God with bars on the window

Cold floor, thin mattress, time standing still

Found Him in a cell with my head hung low

When I finally ran outta my own will

I didn't find Him when life felt good

I found Him when nothing else could

Yeah, I found hope when hope felt gone

That's where I found God

I found Him in a county jumper

And a number, not a name

In a letter from my mama

Saying, "Son, you still can change"

Found Him in the silence

When the noise was stripped away

When I had no one left to blame

But myself and every choice I made

Rock bottom don't sound holy

But that's where He started molding me

I found God with bars on the window

I found Him in a halfway house

Plastic chairs, bad coffee, open wounds

Men just trying to stay sober

One day clean, praying it holds till noon

Found Him in the meetings

Where the truth don't wear a suit

Just broken men learning how

To live one honest minute through

He met me in the mess I made

Didn't flinch, didn't turn away

Said, "Son, I've been here all along

Just waiting on you to come home"

I found God when I was empty
