"Pied Piper"
Once upon a time, there was a town made of toys
That had lost all its color and lost all its joy
There weren't enough dollhouses, the trains would not run
And the teddy bear mayor had banned having fun
Not a laugh could be heard in the chocolate box streets
For the mayor had taken all the other toys' sweets
He just sat in his castle with ten soldiers on guard
While the people of Toyville spent their days working hard
Then one rainy day, all their troubles increased
As hundreds of rats started flooding the streets
The people of Toyville could stand it no more
So they angrily marched to the mayor's front door
"Mr. Mayor," said a toy, "We're really annoyed
We're hungry and freezing and overworked toys
Now the town's full of rats, the small dirty rascals
And you sit around all warm in your castle"
"My friends," lied the mayor, "You think I don't care?
It's no fault of mine, I'm an honorable bear
Times may be hard, but the tables are turning
Leave it with me, I'll deal with these vermin"
So the teddy bear mayor sent his soldiers to town
To herd the rats to the river and leave them to drown
But when the next day, the toys opened their doors
The hundreds of rats had swam back to shore
The teddy bear mayor was at quite a loss
And the people of Toyville were getting more cross
And just as the mayor was starting to fume
A man in bright colors danced into his room
"My name's the Pied Piper," he said once inside
"And news of your troubles has spread far and wide
There's no creature alive not moved by my songs
Just pay me a penny, and the rats will be gone"
"A penny?" Laughed the mayor, "We'll see how you do
Get rid of the rats and I'll pay you too"
"Double?" Said the piper, "Is that what I heard?"
"Of course," lied the mayor, "I'm a bear of my word"
So the Pied Piper left and went out to the street
Where the hundreds of rats swarmed over his feet
Then he lifted his pipe and played such a sweet song
That all of the rats started dancing along
With a skip and a jump, he led the rats out of town
To a faraway place where they'd never be found
And when he returned, he found the people so pleased
And the teddy bear mayor looking very relieved
"It is done," said the piper, "My payment is due"
"Payment?" Said the mayor, "How silly of you
We're so poor and hungry and times are too hard
I've decided you'll help us, but free of all charge"
The Pied Piper scowled, "It's only two pennies
You're meaner than most and richer than men
I know your game well, you wily old viper
You can cheat all the others, but you can't cheat the piper"
"You think you scare me? I'm a bear of great bearings
I won't pay your fee
All that you have is your dance and your song
So why do I need you now the rats are all gone?"
"Forgive me," said the piper with a delicate bow
"It seems I have failed, there's still a rat in this town"
Then he lifted his pipe and played a new song
At which the whole town of Toyville danced right along
The mayor gave a grunt, then a laugh, then a cheer
And then found himself dancing for the first time in years
"Pied Piper," he laughed, "I'm feeling so free
I'd forgotten what fun having fun can still be"
As he joined all the toys that danced in the streets
The teddy bear mayor gave them each back their sweets
He built up more dollhouses and bought more toy trains
To bring the town's color and joy back again
The Pied Piper danced off on his merry old way to look for more towns
And more songs he could play
Some say he's still out there, still playing his tune
And one day, if you're lucky, he'll visit you too
