The Promise Ring

The strongest thing that I've ever seen

Started out in a little promise ring

My daddy put on my momma's hand

They vowed to do the best they can

They were both real young

Hearts stacked against them by the tongue

And they just stood side by side

Walked down that long road alive

There's no quip in my daddy's eyes

My mama always walked next to mine

And I know that they've had many bad times

They always are coming out just fine

Ten years down the road

Traded that promise ring in on a band of gold

My daddy took my momma by the hand

Said, "Let's raise these kids the best we can"

And the years just keep rolling by

But she's still the apple in my daddy's eyes

He's the one that she can't wait to see

And that's the strongest thing, man, that I've ever seen

There's no quip in my daddy's eyes

My mama always walked next to mine

And I know that they've had many bad times

But they always are coming out just fine

30 years together

Lots of nights of bad weather

But it don't outweigh all the sunshine

They've had a lot of good times

Now life has got them spread apart

They're still hooked up at the heart

That's why they always seem to mean
