Swan

She struggled by the willow

Her wing a broken sail

It was lying on the water

A discarded bridal veil

She was fighting for survival

And could not take to air

Alone beneath the willow

All I could do was stare

A fallen, pure white angel

A fear was in her eyes

I stood frozen on the bankside

Beneath the autumn skies

She struggled in the shallows

As the current moved her on

Caught in the cold water

Past the bend and she was gone

Too far from me for rescue

She drifted from my sight

I felt my sad heart beating

And I couldn't put it right

We struggle and we flounder

As we see our fortunes swing

We struggle in the undertow

With our own broken wing
