By the riverside
Is a banyan tree
Oh, the elegant Aiyyanaar
Lies beneath it
A squirrel
Climbs his shoulder
Reaches for the fruit
It falls
On Aiyyanar's horse
And the terrified horse runs!
He runs, hey!
One hundred miles he runs, hey!
Two hundred miles he runs, hey!
Three hundred miles he runs, hey!
Four hundred miles he runs, hey!
Five hundred miles he runs, hey!
He runs and runs
Beyond the millet farms and paddy fields
Beyond the cracked black soil
Aiyanaar's horse runs
Beyond well-watered and barren lands
Beyond redsoil and farmlands
Aiyanaar's horse runs
Oh, what sorcery is this?
He leaves fragrance of the earth
Of his village behind
Till as far as the eye can see
Are 8-lane highways
And so, the four-legged creature
Hoofs it back to from whence it came
And that Banyan tree quivers in goosebumps
Back over the well-watered and barren lands
Back over the redsoil and farmlands
It sought out that same Banyan tree
