The elephants and the mice
Once upon a time in a land far away
Mice danced and played every day
They lived in the most beautiful city
Their gold and pink houses were so pretty
In a big palace, lived the king of the mice
Like all of the mice, he was kind and nice
He often strolled near the river to think
Its water was clean and sweet to drink
Far from the city were trees tall and green
In this forest, an elephant was queen
Her elephant herd lived happily there
Their friends were tigers, birds, and bears
Inside the big forest was a lake
Where everyone liked to splash and shake
Just like the mice, these animals too
Loved to drink water that was sparkling blue
This lake had begun to dry up though
Lower and lower, it started to go
Then the sun got hotter and hotter
Soon there wasn't any more water
"What shall we do?" the elephants cried
"Queen elephant, the lake has all dried"
They trumpeted their trunks in despair
The water they needed wasn't there
The Queen flapped her ears and thought what to do
Elephants? She declared and trumpeted too
We need new clean water to drink from
Our strongest elephants must find some
The strong elephants left the forest
They travelled for days without a rest
Finally, ahead they saw something glimmer
It was the water of a sparkling river!
This was the river near the city of mice
Its water tasted so fresh and nice
The elephants went back and told the Queen
Soon all of them left the forest green
The king of the mice gaped with surprise
Huge grey elephants! He rubbed his eyes
They were drinking the river water up
Using their curved trunks just like a cup
The other mice all rushed up to him then
"King mouse, there are elephants again!
We're worried they'll drink all the water"
Meanwhile, the sun was growing hotter
The king thought and then gave a smile
"Don't worry, we'll fix this up in a while"
He went to tell the elephant queen his plan
She was sitting under a green palm fan
"Welcome to our city," the kind king said
"Thank you," said the queen, bowing her head
"There is just a little thing," said the king
And he told her what he was thinking, said the queen
"What a marvelous idea! Let's split the water so we can all share!"
If they built a dam in the river's centre, everyone would get along better!
The elephants carried bricks on their backs
The mice stacked them up in great big stacks
Soon they'd built a dam, sturdy and strong
Now there were two rivers to drink from
"Hurray" the mice cheered and danced
The elephants trumpeted and pranced
Long did the king and queen reign
And they never went thirsty again
