Don't nobody own us. Yeah, I wanted to start my album with this song
I think it is the orientation that you get in the lobby as you come
To the resort that is this album. And it sets the precedent, it
Sonically represents the concept of this project, which is this
Freedom that is perceived as rebellious. You know, it's sweet, it has
Urgency. It also has a sense of presence to it. You can hear the
Passion and the pain in my voice and in the song. It's just a very
Very important record to me. It's about this undying, unflinching
Confidence in God's call on your life. We don't have to find God's
Call for us out in the world. Like we're not going to search to some
Holy man or wise, you know, sage to give us our affirmation as to who
We are. Our callings are not given to us outside, they are written
Into us by God. The dignity that we have in those callings, again
They're not given to us. You cannot give us our dignity, you can only
Affirm it. And that sort of confidence, we're not owned. We won't be
Controlled by the sponsorships of people's support or money. Even our
Own sponsorship of ourselves. Like, I want to secure myself, I want
To live in a way that I don't take risks, where I don't put myself
In a position where I may not be seen as favorable with the masses
That is in us! And we're saying even that will not own us. For we
Are free. And that freedom, it doesn't come from just being out
Here whimsically living and irrationally and ignorantly doing
Whatever we want to do. But that freedom comes from a higher sense
Of ownership, which is that we have been completely and totally
Bought and made our Lord's. He is our director, our leader, our King
And above my nationality, above my race, above my ethnic identity
My culture, above all of it floats this kingdom mentality that
Ultimately leads me out to build businesses. It leads me out to put
My life on the line to win people to the kingdom. It sends me out
To continue to do the music the way I feel called to do it. Because
In all those things I've felt tremendous pushback where people want
To come in and they see what you're doing. I've been offered buyouts
"Hey, let us own this." Or I've been told that "We won't rock with
You if you keep your music or your way about you consistent with
Who you've been in the past." I've had to grapple with this and been
Like, "Yo, who is KB? What type of music am I gonna make? What type
Of man am I gonna be?" And I think that wrestle, that continued
Losing sleep birthed this place of "
Nobody owns us. We'll follow Him."
