If I could travel back, way back in time
Early 1800’s, before industry prime
When horse and buggy were the transportation way
And months of dusty roads across the USA
I know I'd find the world much simpler back then
A bit too simple for a complicated man
’Cause I got my fancy automobile
I fly across the sky in a heavy bird of steel
Seeing all the faces I might have never seen
Experiencing places I might have only dreamed
But the fact it is, you know I’d like it either way
Living life the best I can each and every day
The fish once swam where the people now dam
The deer once played where the people now pave
The wolf once killed where the people now build
Some might say that it’s the way of the world
Revolution, improvement on the past
But who knows how long the honeymoon will last
New technology, the risky cutting edge
The looming danger of falling off the edge
I love the compact disc I love the DVD
But there ain’t nothing wrong with a scratched up old LP
Modern pleasures, hedonistic if you will
Sometimes progress is just a bitter swallowed pill
I don’t know much about the inner-working parts
But I appreciate the value of sophisticated art
As time goes by you know the effort never ends
To build upon the present, and let the future be our friend
The fish once swam where the people once dam
The deer once played where the people now pave
The wolf once killed where the people now build
Some might say that it's the way of the world
Oh how nice it'd be if a compromise was found
Where human kind could thrive and wildlife abound
Mother Nature, calmer winds she’d blow
And Mister Father Time moving generously slow
Sometimes I think about how nice that it would be
Sometimes I think that it's a real possibility
The fish once swam where the people now dam
The deer once played where the people now pave
The wolf once killed where the people now build
Some might say that it's the way of the world
