Back in the early 60s
In those oh so happy days
My friend Sherry with her red dress on
She could do the shimmy all night long
Sherry baby won't you come out tonight
Tell your mom everything is alright
But it wasn't alright
Back in the early 60s
In those oh so happy days
No birth control, criminal abortion
Russian roulette was the only game in town
Many a girl took that chance
Sherry did
Here's how it went in those oh so happy days
The girl finds a doctor
Agrees on a price
Rents a motel room
Doesn't have to be nice
Sheets and towels
Her mother won't miss
And her best friend has to agree to assist
'Cause the deal with the doctor is if things go wrong
He's gonna run
The best friend's there to call 911
Spread eagled on a table
In a cheap motel room
Waiting for the drugs to kick in
She wonders if it's door number one
Or door number two
With God the odds always favor the house
To stop the thought that she might die
She tries to think of lemon pie
Mom how upset she'd be
If she knew what's happening to me
Oh I forgot
In case I die
I wish I'd said goodbye
Oops now she needs to throw up
And all the while the doctor's poking around down there
Trying to make enough of a tear
To bring on a miscarriage
And not a hemorrhage
If all goes right
There's no need to run
No call to 911
The doctor splits
The girl goes to emergency
Feeling ill of course
But she doesn't care
She's got her life back
That's not how it went for my friend Sherry
My friend Sherry with her red dress on
She could do the shimmy all night long
Sherry baby won't you come out tonight
Tell your mom everything is alright
Sherry couldn't find a doctor
So she settled for a med student
Knowing if he punctured X instead of Y
She could die
And she did
At 17 Sherry baby was dead
Help me out here
Why in God's name
Does anyone want to go back to that?
My friend Sherry with her red dress on
She could do the shimmy all night long
Sherry baby won't you come out tonight
Tell your mom everything is alright
Tell your mom everything is alright
