Sweet chimes in the middle of the night
Calling the hour through the dark
Ringing so soft through the quiet house
Leaving their trace like a spark
All of the rooms lie still and dim
Shadows asleep on the wall
Yet through the hush of the resting world
I hear the heavens call
With my eyes closed I can almost see
The wheel of the stars turning slow
Great bright circles overhead
Moving where no feet can go
Silent they shine and silent they burn
Far through the measureless height
Still in my soul I can almost hear
The song of their endless flight
I would rather lie awake
Under heaven's silent sea
While the stars go sailing on
And the night speaks to me
All the world falls far below
Small as foam beneath the keel
And my heart in reverent awe
Learns how vast and small to feel
Better than sleep is this stillness here
Under the star-covered dome
Feeling the weight of the endless sky
Yet somehow feeling at home
The world below sinks out of sound
Its troubles losing their claim
A brief white wake on darkened sea
Gone almost as soon as it came
What are we but breath and light
Held for a moment inside the night
Yet God has hung these stars above
And taught the dark to sing of love
I would rather lie awake
Under heaven's silent sea
While the stars go sailing on
And the night speaks to me
All the world falls far below
Small as foam beneath the keel
And my heart in reverent awe
Learns how vast and small to feel
Sweet chimes through the midnight air
Stars still singing everywhere
And my soul awake and still
Resting in the Father's will
Rest my soul
Rest be still
Ooh
