Shh…
Awoo
I crept down the stair on Yuletide night
When the moon was shining bright
Heard a lute by the candle flame
Singing soft and low
Then I peeked behind the pantry door
And I couldn't help but stare
For I saw my mother laughing there
With a wolf at the hearth below
He had fur as grey as winter frost
And a smile both warm and odd
I thought he'd steal our silverware
But instead he bowed and nodded
I saw mother kiss the moonlit bard
By the old Yule fire's glow
She laughed when he let out a howl
Very soft and very low
If father knew what I just saw
He'd drop his cup of ale
I saw mother kiss the moonlit bard
With a tail and fur and tail
He set his lute upon his knee
And sang of snow and cheer
Mother clapped along in time
Said, "Play that one again, my dear"
I hid behind the hanging cloaks
And barely made a sound
As he twirled her once across the floor
With claws still firmly down
Now I know it seems quite strange indeed
And maybe sounds absurd
But he only kissed her on the cheek
When the final note was heard
I saw mother kiss the moonlit bard
Under mistletoe of pine
She said, "It's just a Yuletide song"
And swore she'd crossed no line
Still I swear upon my woolen socks
And every bell I heard
I saw mother kiss the moonlit bard
And the bard was half a wolf
If you ask me what it means at all
I think I've figured out
When the nights grow long and cold and dark
We all need cheer about
And even wolves who roam the wild
Must rest by fire's embrace
So don't be shocked if love appears
In fur or friendly face
Yes I saw mother kiss the moonlit bard
And then he slipped away
Out the door and into snow
Before the break of day
Now mother hums his melody
While sweeping near the fire
I saw mother kiss the moonlit bard
And smile just a little wider
I won't tell
Awoo
