Because I'm sitting on the inside, looking at the outside
Waiting for that evening mail
Lordy, what a feeling, when it comes a stealing
Just this wicked low down jail
Separating me from everything but that evening mail
I'm like a ship without a sail
I wrote my one-time mama down in Jacksonville
I said, "Look, honey, I'm in jail
Now, baby, don't you fail me, hurry up and mail me bail"
That was a year ago and I'm still on the inside
Looking at the outside waiting for that evening mail
Now the reason that they have me in this awful place
I mistook a two spot that I thought was an ace
And the guy that had the dice grabbed my dough and ran
I missed him with a brick and hit a policeman
Now that policeman grabbed me by the neck in a rage
He came and threw me in this wicked iron cage
They tied two iron apples just below my knee
And when they ride away it's gonna set me free
Now I just asked a trusty how long he thought I must be
Locked up before they'll set me free
He said he heard the warden say that I'd be boarding here
'Til 1993
So I'm still sitting on the inside looking at the outside
Waiting for that evening mail
